collective breath map (2024)

(wood, recycled bedsheets, fabric marker)

created for Somatic Spa, a playground-like experience engaging the senses and being present in the body, the collective breath map is a personal and collective exploration of the expression in which our breath guides us. seventy humans participated. imagining their breath as a river, a connection point to both past and future, I read a meditation to each person and asked them to explore how their breath moved them. this is our collective breath in this moment.

The You Are Home project addreses the socioecological intersection of the housing and climate crises. The destruction of our planet and our dependence on toxic systems has destabilized connection to “home”, a place that is embodied in our own bodies, communities, and the land. The inextricable connection between our health (spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally) and the health of the planet has manifested into many crises that adversely impacts our ability to get our basic needs met. Housing instability, especially for young people and marginalized communities is at the forefront of the crises that, we, humans have created through our exploitation of our natural world.

In New Mexico Indivisible Young Artists’ first fellowship program, I created the willow womb installation and three digital collages. As part of the You Are Home campaign, these works serve both an affirmation and an invocation that asks each of us to sit with our own sacredness, creating a space to be with the radical resistance that is our own breath; the survival of our socioecological systems depends upon it.
