Isolated Incidents / Confined Creations

In March of 2020, Chattanooga began shutting down to socially distance during COVID-19. I had just taken a job as the Visual Arts Coordinator at Barking Legs Theater, where we were already discussing ways to best support our artist community who were deeply affected by the quarantine and resulting loss of work and contracts. We decided that this time could be used to reimagine our space and compensate artists to create work in a series of isolated residencies. I selected three local artists into our space for Confined Creations / Isolated Incidents that culminated in installations in the theater’s bathrooms. In providing space for artists to work and create, we hoped to provokes a deeper engagement and reflection of the consequential domino effects of isolation, as being quarantined impacts our most valuable resource- our connection to each other and support systems.
